This song... it’s so much more than just a melody or a set of lyrics to me. It’s a piece of my childhood self, captured in a ballad, and shared with all of you. Writing Runaway was one of the most cathartic experiences I’ve had in a long time. It’s a song about longing—for freedom, for love, for something more. But it’s also about finding the courage to stay when running feels like the only option.
I wrote Runaway on about a time in my life when the world felt impossibly heavy. I remember living in Brooklyn, sitting upon a windowsill in the dorms, staring at the view of the Brooklyn bridge and the moon, and wishing I could just disappear into the night—leave behind the sadness, the expectations, the noise. That’s where the line for the chorus came from: “Run away so my heart won't break.”
As the song unfolded, I realized it wasn’t just about escaping. It was about confronting the parts of myself I wanted to run from—the fears, the doubts, the things I thought made me weak and the things that were out of my control. And in writing it, I discovered strength in that vulnerability.
The production is simple, almost stripped bare—just drums, ambient chimes, and my voice. I wanted it to feel intimate, like I’m sitting in the room with you, sharing a secret. I hope when you listen, it feels like we’re having a quiet moment together, just us and the music.
Releasing this song is nerve-wracking in the best way. I’ve never felt so exposed, but I’ve also never felt so connected to what I’ve created. I hope Runaway speaks to you the way it’s spoken to me. Whether it makes you cry, reflect, or just take a deep breath, I hope it finds its way into your heart.
